What Do Challenge Coins Represent?
Challenge coins are often a coin shape made from a certain kind of metal be it bronze, silver, gold, platinum or even a combination of these metals. But not all the time these coins are round because there are coins made to be triangular in shape while some are specifically made for the meaning it projects. They have logo in front and may also have an emblem embossed on the back and front.
A particular date, name of the unit or even slogan is used in these coins and then, given to members of the military. If for instance they’re given as award for a job deemed to be difficult or completed a mission, this is usually commemorated as well.
The very first challenge coins were given in the military and even though stories vary for each account, the basics appear to include a member of the military challenging other to produce the coin. The tradition of giving such coin starts in the branch of military which is now the United States Air Force or USAF. These are carried only by the most courageous and bravest men in the military who are not afraid to fly into enemy territories to do their mission.
The challenge coin is referred at times as honor coins because of this. More often than not, those who served the Navy, Army, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guards and other departments carry these coins. As a matter of fact, the coin became so popular that a lot of civil servants these days have one. These coins have department that the person is hired by whereas military coin has squadron or division as emblem. And as a way to acknowledge special occasions, these coins are sometimes given as well to different members of the organization.
Members of the Air Force get the coins only after they have completed the basic training. Now say that the officer training is chosen on graduation, there are new officers who’ll get the coin. To keep with true meaning of challenge coins, it’s said that the rules of the challenge are kept only within the military unit and those who have been given the coin in the unit. Challenge coins are well known to boost morale of the holder.
There are rules that have to be followed when carrying the coins. The value of challenge coin is immediately nullified if it is defaced by any means similar to boring a hole in it, wearing it as a necklace and so forth. Different units are not allowing members to bring the coins in their wallet instead, a common way of carrying it is in the pouch, worn around the neck.
